History

and Facts

Fourth Generation (1955-1959)

In the 1950s, small-block V8 engines gradually replaced the larger, bulkier Stovebolt engines, marking a shift towards more compact and fuel-efficient vehicles. This transition significantly improved performance without sacrificing power. In 1957, Chevrolet introduced the first four-wheel-drive (4WD) Chevy Suburban, debuting alongside the traditional two-wheel-drive model, expanding its versatility and appeal. During this period, GMC also adopted the Suburban name, launching the GMC 100 pickup under the same branding. This move helped establish the Suburban nameplate as a versatile designation linked to various body styles and types over the ensuing years.
